Craft Apps
SoundCraft: The Open-Source Pro Tools Alternative in Rust
Updated 2026-10-11
SoundCraft is the audio workstation in the Craft App Suite - "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Avid Pro Tools in pure Rust."
It is pre-alpha. The README says it covers about 94% of the incumbent's menu items and roughly 70% of its features by presence, and is about 40% of the way to replacing it for real work.
What it does today
- Multitrack editing with edit modes, tools, playlists and comping lanes.
- Mix window with 10 inserts and 10 sends per track, busses, VCAs and routing folders.
- MIDI editor with piano roll and step input; breakpoint automation with Write, Touch and Latch.
- CLAP, VST3 and Audio Unit plug-in hosting plus built-in plug-ins.
- Video track and surround/immersive output up to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics; score editor with MusicXML export.
- Bounce to WAV, AIFF or FLAC with LUFS metering; CLI, JSON control channel and MCP server.
Where it is rough
- Choosing an audio interface and buffer size, and recording MIDI from a controller, are on the alpha checklist.
- Session interchange (AAF/OMF) and translations are missing.
- See ROADMAP.md and docs/gaps.md for the full list.
