PhotoCraft vs GIMP: Which Free Photo Editor Should You Use?
Updated 2026-10-11
GIMP is the long-established free image editor. PhotoCraft is the brand-new Photoshop-shaped one. They solve the same problem from opposite ends: GIMP has years of stability, PhotoCraft has a familiar Photoshop layout and PSD focus.
Interface and learning curve
PhotoCraft deliberately follows Photoshop's workspace, panels and shortcuts, so a Photoshop user has almost nothing to relearn. GIMP has its own conventions and a longer adjustment period for people coming from Photoshop.
PSD and colour
PhotoCraft reads and writes PSD and PSB, with adjustment layers, type layers and layer styles, plus ICC colour management and 8/16/32-bit documents. GIMP can open PSDs but is not built around the Photoshop file model.
Maturity and ecosystem
- GIMP: mature, widely packaged, large plug-in and tutorial ecosystem, years of bug fixes.
- PhotoCraft: weeks old, early alpha, thin ecosystem, fast-moving - expect bugs and missing tools.
Which to pick
- You live in PSD files and want Photoshop muscle memory: try PhotoCraft.
- You need something stable for deadlines today: GIMP (or Krita for painting).
- Both are free, so run both and keep what suits your files.
